Welo opals originate from the Wollo Province in northern Ethiopia, specifically in volcanic rock formations near the town of Wegel Tena. These opals are a relatively recent discovery in the gem market, with large deposits first found in 2008, and are known for their vivid play-of-color and hydrophane properties (the ability to absorb water).
