They believe it is the 'Sky Stone' and has been brought to the surface of the earth from the heavens. Tibetans have valued the stone in this way since at least 1,000 BC. It has been used as a token of love between people and is thought to protect both the person giving the gem and the person who received it as a gift.
Tibetan turquoise comes from several areas in Tibet, including the Gangschan Mountains, the region near Lhasa, Draya, and the mountains of Derge. While the origin is often debated, the gemstones are prized for their spiritual significance and often have a blue-green color with a strong black matrix, which distinguishes them from other turquoise varieties. It's important to note that mining ceased in Tibet in 1951, so much of the "Tibetan" turquoise available today is believed to be Chinese turquoise, which has been historically traded with Tibet.
