Agate, a banded variety of chalcedony, has been used throughout history for its beauty and perceived mystical properties. It's been found in host rocks as old as 3,720 million years, but its initial discovery may have taken place around 371 to 287 BCE. The name agate comes from the Greek word Achates, which refers to a river in Sicily.
