Rainbow moonstone comes from various locations worldwide, including India, Sri Lanka, Madagascar, and Tanzania, with India and Sri Lanka being prominent sources for high-quality stones. Although technically a variety of labradorite, it is a member of the feldspar family and is known for its blue, rainbow, or multicolored adularescence.
Labradorite is named after its origin in the Canadian province of Labrador, where it was first discovered in the 1770s. While the most prized variety still comes from this region, the gemstone is also mined in other locations worldwide, including Finland, Madagascar, Russia, Mexico, and Norway.
