Pyrite (FeS₂) is the most common sulfide mineral on Earth, composed of iron and sulfur. Known as "fool's gold" for its brassy yellow color and metallic luster, it was historically used to start fires because it emits sparks when struck against metal. Pyrite forms in almost all rock environments (igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic) under a wide range of temperatures. Its creation generally requires a combination of iron, sulfur, and an oxygen-poor environment.
