Purpurite was first discovered in the Faires Tin mine in Kings Mountain, North Carolina, USA, in 1905. Its name comes from the Latin word "purpura" for purple, due to its distinctive color. The best-known specimens now come from Namibia, though it is also found in other locations such as Western Australia, France, and Portugal.
