Peridot originates deep within the Earth's mantle, brought to the surface by volcanic activity, with ancient sources on Egypt's Zabargad Island, while today major sources include Arizona (San Carlos Reservation), Myanmar, and Pakistan; it also has rare extraterrestrial origins in meteorites. Its name comes from the Arabic faridat (gem), and it was called the "gem of the sun" by Egyptians, who mined it on Topazios Island.
