Pyrite, also known as "fool's gold", forms in sedimentary rocks in oxygen-poor environments. These environments are usually organic, such as coal and black shale, where decaying organic material consumes oxygen and releases sulfur. The world's largest producers of pyrite are Italy and China, followed by Russia and Peru.
