Moldavite is a natural, olive-green vitreous silica gemstone (tektite) formed approximately 15 million years ago by a massive meteorite impact in southern Germany (Nördlinger Ries crater). The intense heat melted surrounding rock, which was splashed into the atmosphere and cooled as it fell in the Czech Republic, Germany, and Austria.
