Lapis lazuli is a gemstone that originated in Afghanistan, particularly in the Badakhshan province's Kokcha River valley. The Sar-e-Sang mine deposits in this area have been mined for over 7,000 years, making it one of the world's oldest gemstone mines. This lapis lazuli is considered to be the finest in the world and was exported to many ancient civilizations, including Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece, Rome, India, China, and Japan.
