Howlite's origin is rooted in its discovery in 1868 by Canadian chemist Henry How in Nova Scotia, Canada, leading it to be named in his honor. While its discovery was in Canada, the mineral is primarily found in the United States, especially in California's borate deposits, and also occurs in other locations like Canada, Serbia, Mexico, and Germany.
