Howlite is a borate mineral discovered near Windsor, Nova Scotia, Canada, in 1868 by chemist and geologist Henry How. Initially deemed a nuisance by miners in a gypsum quarry, it was later named in honor of How by James Dwight Dana. Major sources today include Canada, the USA (California), Mexico, and Turkey.
