Bloodstone, also known as heliotrope, is a cryptocrystalline quartz (chalcedony) featuring a deep, dark green base speckled with vivid red spots of iron oxide. The highest quality, gem-grade bloodstone primarily originates from the Deccan Plateau in India, notably the state of Gujarat. Other significant global deposits are located in Brazil, Australia, China, Madagascar, and the United States. The stone is formed when silica-rich fluid fills rock cavities, and iron-bearing minerals (like hematite) create its distinctive red inclusions. The earliest documented bloodstone mines in India date back over 5,000 years to 3,000 BC. Ancient Babylonians used it to craft amulets and seals, and it was famously recorded in the ancient Egyptian Ebers Papyrus for its supposed medicinal properties.
