Black saltwater pearls, known as Tahitian black pearls, primarily originate from the black-lipped oyster in the lagoons of French Polynesia, particularly around Tahiti. While they are called "Tahitian," the cultivation farms are spread across the islands, with Tahiti serving as the main trading hub. Other black-lipped oysters are found in other regions, but pearls from those locations are not called Tahitian pearls.
