Banded agate is a microcrystalline variety of quartz (chalcedony) that forms over millions of years within cavities of volcanic rocks, such as basalt or rhyolite, as silica-rich water deposits alternating layers. Key sources include Botswana (renowned for fine, grey/white bands), Brazil, Uruguay, Namibia, and the United States.
