Baltic amber, also known as succinite, is a fossilized tree resin that originated in the Baltic region of northern Europe around 50 million years ago. It's believed to have formed when a tree produced too much resin, which then dripped to the forest floor, became embedded in sediment, and was compressed by overlying deposits.
